Not so large social networking sites

I thought it may me interesting to talk about some of the not so popular sites out there using social media to create a great business - companies in the social media trenches. For instance http://davesgarden.com/ - not a pretty site. However at last count they have over 350,000 members, about 6,900 of those are paying subscribers, over 25,000 posts in their forums. Do you find this valuable?
