I use PowerPoint2007 for my presentations, which I 'can' save into 2003 format, but then editing of the cooler features is lost.
I thought about uploading the slides to here for you all to play with and use, but there's a 2mb limit and the file sizes (I use a lot of youtube movies in my presentations) is waaaay over that. Even pdf versions of the slide decks are usually over 2mb.
Would it be of value if I zipped up my presentations and left you with links to the 2007 versions, complete with movies, etc.?

I use Yousendit.com for quick file transfers, though it does time out after a few days, they do have professional accounts for not much cost that you can use to keep content available and much large sizes.
I did a review of these types of sites a while ago: http://opsamericas.com/?p=281

Wiki "chaos" -- is it avoidable?

I'm creating a wiki for a group of 30+ people to collaborate on what will be an evolving, living list of best practices. On principle, I think the open process for writing and editing is ideal. But as the one who is ultimately responsible for this document, I'm anticipating a confused, chaotic mess (ranging from wrong or confusing info that can't be verified or attributed to a given writer, or having to moderate a "contributor war"). I'm eager to learn from your experience.
(Apologies in advance if this has already been addressed; I've searched the archives and didn't find anything, so I'll assume this is a new discussion here.)

While part of the result will be down to how you organize the team working on this, your worst concern is unlikely to materialize. If you set up your wiki so that you need to be logged-in to contribute, then you will be able to track every change back to the person that wrote it. As well, wikis generally have version controls built-in so if a page does become chaotic, you can always revert it or edit it yourself.
As with any written document, editing is one of the most important parts. Don't expect a fully-formed document to materialize without some editing. Still, it's unlikely to go the way you worry about, especially in a small group.
Your bigger challenge may be in encouraging participation from those 30 people.

Social bookmarking is a great way to promote your blog, articles or URLs with the right community. Use social bookmarking search features to track down groups of interest. Hi, I work in internal communications for a company in the UK. This stuff's fascinating and patently going to have an immense impact on how people communicate inside large organisations. One question though: how do you put it all into practice in a corporate? For example, if I wanted to help our CEO set up an internal blog, do I need our IT department to buy the software and "host" it? Same question for wikis?

Dave, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm a real technophobe, so hope you don't mind if I ask you to clarify something: what do 'hosting' and 'self hosting' mean and what's the difference between those options and using a third party? It isn't possible to patronise me on this, so please do explain this as if you were talking to a child.

I work in internal comms and an analogous question is whether we should write the CEO's internal blog. I'd apply the principle that a blog should feel informal and authentic - you can usually smell a communication that's been written by one of the PR or internal comms guys; there's a cautious banality to it. The best story I heard recently was about the General Motors CEO raving about a competitor's new range in a way that their PR man wouldn't have dreamed of writing about in a public domain. So no, I don't think the PR guys shouldn't write the external facing blog; the CEO or whoever is relevant at the time (e.g. head of a product line) should write it then perhaps ask the PR man to do a quick sense check to make sure it doesn't say anything that could put the company's reputation at risk. Even that system isn't pure blogging, but it would lower the blood pressures of the PR guys. I've been gathering a list of CEO blogs, because that 'look at what your peers do' thing will be more persuasive than any arguments I can put together.

I thought it may me interesting to talk about some of the not so popular sites out there using social media to create a great business - companies in the social media trenches. For instance http://davesgarden.com/ - not a pretty site. However at last count they have over 350,000 members, about 6,900 of those are paying subscribers, over 25,000 posts in their forums.

Innovative Support to Emergencies, Diseases and Disaster (InSTEDD), is a nonprofit organization that aims to help communities around the world use Web and communications technology to identify and warn others of outbreaks and disaster and to help coordinate rescue responses.
Examples of social media technology being utilized for this project include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Earth.
For example, an aid worker could generate a text message about a patient with untreated symptoms in Laos. That message would link to an application showing the patient's location on a Google Earth map. A Facebook application would allow aid workers to see nearby contacts and be able to reach out to his/her "friends" for assistance.

To help you reach goals your press releases should -be consistant , posting one atleast 1x per month -use different prospectives, angles & approaches for each release to broaden the audiences your message will be relevant to -make use of your digital assets to add depth & texture to the content no one wants to read just plain text, releases are a VISUAL medium -written with the concept in mind that a press release can and should act as a stepping stone from someones search to your site. -be tailored to reach out to the 3 audiences that are looking for info online, 1. the e-commerce customer 2. the media and 3. the search engines. -be optimized w/key words to be more relevant to those 3 audiences, it is a skill that can be learned

Near the end of this page, the following text appears:
"In reaction, Todd Defren of SHIFT Communications introduced his 'social media press release template' and kicked off a debate that continues to this day."
What debate? Does this simply refer to the ongoing discussing about what an SMNR should include, how it should be distributed, etc.? To me, mentioning some ongoing "debate" without a link or an explanation leaves a huge hole in this otherwise great start to an article.
