I'll be training other Real Estate agents soon in Social Media. I am a bit of a novice, still, yet will likely have an outline. I am willing to share. Wondering however if kami will be joining the Wiki, or is she keeping the info close to the vest??

Not so large social networking sites

I thought it may me interesting to talk about some of the not so popular sites out there using social media to create a great business - companies in the social media trenches. For instance http://davesgarden.com/ - not a pretty site. However at last count they have over 350,000 members, about 6,900 of those are paying subscribers, over 25,000 posts in their forums.

Lee - you can upload your presentation to slideshare and then embed it here on this wiki, or at least place a link to it. Slideshare now allows users to add sound to presentations, so you can add narration if you like.

Expensive lessons from a social network journey

Good morning Lee. Have always enjoyed your reports from Oz in FIR!

I've taken my basic "stump" social media presentation in PowerPoint 2003 and converted it into a Flash presentation that I'm using to demonstrate Articulate Presenter to new clients. Many clients are asking how to combine PowerPoint and podcasts, and we think this is a great solution. The program creates a Flash player you can post to a website, in front of, or behind a firewall, burn to CD, etc. It permits interactive exhibits, self-paced quizzes, and all the other bells/whistles you'd like for an e-learning module.

Everyone can take a look at http://www.lubetkin.net/slideshows/socialmedia/player.html. Might be a better solution for some situations where just posting a PowerPoint deck and an MP3 file as separate downloads is just impractical.

I think it's mostly a time thing. It's a nonprofit organization and all members are volunteers. The objective is to extend the conversations members have been having and open it up to develop naturally. We didn't want to box it up in any way.

That said, it is the second most viewed section of the site. So, people are reading -- We've been posting news briefs, pseudo-Romenesko. Maybe we boxed it? We're trying to pull in some guest bloggers for a different voice, but it's been a slow return.

It is something the members expressed a want for, including video blogging, podcasting, etc. And I agree, it's not ideal for PR to write the company blog. But I wonder if there are any good examples of PR that do?

I wouldn't say that's ideal, but I don't think it's a no-no. Depends on what your objectives are.

A bigger concern, for me, would be why no-one else wants to. Is it a time thing, or because no-one else sees the value in having a blog? Is your organization ready to use that particular tool, or is it one of those "we need one of those blog things my niece talks about" cases?

Social Media: Government and No-profit examples

Innovative Support to Emergencies, Diseases and Disaster (InSTEDD), is a nonprofit organization that aims to help communities around the world use Web and communications technology to identify and warn others of outbreaks and disaster and to help coordinate rescue responses.

Examples of social media technology being utilized for this project include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Earth.

For example, an aid worker could generate a text message about a patient with untreated symptoms in Laos. That message would link to an application showing the patient's location on a Google Earth map. A Facebook application would allow aid workers to see nearby contacts and be able to reach out to his/her "friends" for assistance.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for all your recent contributions - this is great stuff.

Posting the presentations as zip files would be fantastic - they would be a great resource. I can think of alternatives to doing that, though, that would let the community here "play with and use" it: pick the best of the worded content and post it on the page directly, then embed the videos via YouTube (you can do that via the 'widget' button when editing a page).

How does that sound? I don't know if that would be too much work... let me know if I can help you out.
