What is a Social Network?

Social networks focus on online communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on. (from Wikipedia, edited)

For instance http://davesgarden.com/ - not a pretty site. However at last count they have over 350,000 members, about 6,900 of those are paying subscribers, over 25,000 posts in their forums.
